As of now, the only way to do visual mods in Devil May Cry 2 HD Collection, is injecting textures externally. Thankfully, there is a tool called SpecialK, which allows for this injection, without the need to open any extra software running with the game. So you can easily drop the files in the game folder, open the game, and it's all done.
I'll separate this guide into two parts. A more simple one if you just want to install mods, and a second part for modders.
GUIDE FOR PLAYERS
If you want to install DMC 2 Texture mods, I prepared everything for you already, and here's how:
Step 1. Download ModManager and DMC 2 HDC Base Files
Step 2. Download the TEXTURE INJECTOR
Step 3. Extract its files inside modmanager\Games\DMC 2 HDC.
Step 4. Open ModManager.exe in the Devil May Cry 2 - HD Collection section, tick the box to activate mod.
Step 5. Go to RELEASED MODS, download the mod(s) of your preference, extract them in modmanager\Games\DMC 2 HDC, then open ModManager again (in case you closed it), or hit Refresh Mod List, and install the ones you want it.
Step 6. Open your DMC HD Collection, and check if this appears in the superior part of your screen
If it did, then the injector was installed succesfully!
Note: if you plan in installing mods to DMC 1, you don't need to install this Texture Injector again. As long as it is installed once through ModManager, you'll be able to install mods in both games.
GUIDE FOR MODDERS
If you want to create DMC 2 texture mods, then you'll need to follow some different steps:
Step 1. Repeat the Steps 1 to 3 from the GUIDE FOR PLAYERS above, but on Step 2, you will instead download this TEXTURE EXTRACTOR.
Step 2. Open ModManager.exe in the Devil May Cry 2 - HD Collection section, tick the box to activate the tool.
Step 3. Open the game and go until the area that you want to dump a texture.
I set up to dump EVERYTHING ON LOAD, which means that every texture the game has loaded in the memory at that moment will be extracted, like this:
The textures are dumped in the path Devil May Cry HD Collection\SK_Res\dump\textures\dmc2.exe, just like in the picture above.
Step 4. You will have to visually find what you want, and ignore all the rest. So I recommend you have a save prepared to dump only the minimum necessary of textures.
The settings of the textures are dumped automatically as well as a .txt file, so if the textures has an Alpha Channel or something, you'll be able to read that and input when exporting the textures from your IMAGE EDITING SOFTWARE of preference.
To insert back in the game, you need to delete the tag Compressed/Uncompressed in the texture name, and leave only the number id, like this:
Then you add that texture to the path Devil May Cry HD Collection\SK_Res\inject\textures\dmc2. You can create sub-folders inside this path for organization if you want.
Step 5. Once you inserted the texture back, disable Texture Extractor | Dev Mode in ModManager and enable Texture Injector (or else you will keep dumping every new texture the game loads).
Also, you can delete all the other dumped textures from Devil May Cry HD Collection\SK_Res\dump\textures\dmc2.exe that you don't intend to modify.
They won't interfere in anything, but you don't want unnecessary files weighing more and more in your game folder.
Last and most important note: What are the differences between "both tools"? Well, they are both a mod called SpecialK, but different versions. One is older and more compatible to install texture mods specifically in DMC HDC games without issues. The other one is newer and better to dump textures, but works weird overall. So I set them differently to make it as easiest as possible for mods creation and installation.
Now you can give DMC 2 some love and start doing your own mods!
